Cora has her own reasons for wanting to visit the city: She grew up in a New York orphanage before being sent to Kansas for adoption and wants to find out about her birth family.Ĭora undertakes the task of keeping the headstrong, unconventional Louise in line with 1920s notions of respectability while secretly investigating her own past. ![]() Louise has been accepted to a summer session at a prestigious dance school there and dreams of becoming famous. Joy is an emotion characterized by a state of happiness, pleasure, or satisfaction. Along with naming each associated emotion, we'll also describe it so you can identify them within yourself. To help you better understand your emotions, let's dive deep into each subcategory of the main categories. Plutchik has used both two-dimensional and three-dimensional models to show the relationship between primary emotions, the spectrum in which they sit, and the combination of emotions that we may experience at once. On either side of the primary emotions, Plutchik listed “degrees” in which these emotions can be felt. Some days, you’re jumping out of your set with joy! Other days, you are simply feeling calm and happy. Saying that you feel “joy” doesn’t always feel like enough to cover the full spectrum of that one emotion. In between each emotion is an emotion that combines two adjoining emotions: Maybe you’re waiting for a check in the mail or are particularly excited about the year to come. ![]() You feel joy, but you also feel anticipation. You have probably found yourself in between two emotions. But there is more to the Emotion Wheel than just eight primary emotions.

Does sound diffract2/7/2024 ![]() ![]() ![]() Sources are said to be coherent when the waves emitting from it have constant phase difference and same frequency. Diffraction involves a change in direction of waves as they pass through an opening or around a barrier in their path. Reflection of waves off straight barriers follows the. The spreading of waves when they pass through an opening, or around an obstacle into regions where we would not expect them, is called diffraction. A sound wave is unaffected by a barrier the wave. Strong (short wavelength) noises always travel farther than cheap (long wavelength) ones. Reflection occurs when there is a bouncing off of a barrier. Owl, for example, can converse over great ranges because their long-wavelength guffaws are capable to diffract over forest trees and go further in comparison to the songbirds’ short-wavelength tweets. The bending of the path is an observable behavior when the medium is a two- or three-dimensional medium. The corners or opening through which diffraction takes place also acts as a source. Reflection, refraction and diffraction are all boundary behaviors of waves associated with the bending of the path of a wave. ![]() Therefore, sound waves can be diffracted.Īccording to the Huygen’s each point on a wave acts as a source and hence is called secondary wavelets. Owls are able to communicate at long distances due to the fact that their hoots, which have long wavelengths, are able to diffract around forest trees. Some applications of diffraction of sound are. The sound waves diffract around the corners or through door openings as we are able to hear the conversations going on in the next room. The Dutch scientist Christiaan Huygens (16291695) developed a useful technique for. The direction of propagation is perpendicular to the wavefronts (or wave crests) and is represented by an arrow like a ray. When bending around the corners, the sharpness of diffraction increases with increase in wavelength and vice versa. 1: A transverse wave, such as an electromagnetic wave like light, as viewed from above and from the side. Here, $d$ is the length of the opening or the distance between the slits The mathematical representation of diffraction is given by. It occurs when a wave strikes an opening or an obstacle in its path whose size is comparable to the wavelength of the wave. Waves bend when the obstacle or opening is comparable to the wavelength of the wave.ĭiffraction is the phenomenon which is described as the bending of waves around an obstacle or corner into a region of geometrical shadow. The larger the wavelength, the more the waves bend. Hint: Diffraction is a phenomenon in which waves bend around the corners or openings to spread in a region of geometrical space. This study used software such as Mathematica to model sound waves and find the optimal spots to generate sound to cancel. ![]()

![]() Social activities have been linked to better connectivity between different parts of the brain.A word search puzzle is basically a combination of meaningful letters in a grid. The person with the pen (or tablet) in their hand typically reads out the clues, and we all chime in with our best answers. Lastly, at least in my house, crossword puzzles are generally a social activity. The hippocampus will then remember those new connections, strengthening both your hippocampus and cortex. These features mean that crossword puzzles cause large areas of your cortex to be active, and stimulate new connections in your brain. Moreover, crossword puzzle clues often force you to link concepts you hadn't pictured together. Second, a well-designed crossword puzzle will engage multiple brain regions in your search for the right word.First, doing crossword puzzles is difficult, and many studies have shown that performing moderately difficult cognitive tasks is helpful for cognitive and brain health. There are several reasons why working on crossword puzzles in daily life could improve your thinking and memory, and even slow the shrinking of your brain. The crossword puzzles were designed to be moderately difficult, equivalent to a Thursday New York Times crossword puzzle. How many crossword puzzles should you be doing?Ī look at the study protocol reveals that the participants were asked to work on crossword puzzles four times a week, for 30 minutes per session. When compared to playing online cognitive games, working on online crossword puzzles resulted in between 0.5% and 1% less shrinkage in both the hippocampus and the cortex over the course of the 18-month study. ![]() Two common structures evaluated in this context are the size of the hippocampus, which remembers the episodes of your life, and the thickness of the cortex, which is where your thinking occurs. ![]() So, the question to ask about brain volume is whether an intervention like medication or crossword puzzles can slow the shrinkage. In individuals with mild cognitive impairment and in those aging normally, the brain tends to shrink. How much might crossword puzzles benefit your brain? So, to be showing an improvement in cognition at both 12 and 78 weeks is quite impressive. The other thing to keep in mind is that about half of people with mild cognitive impairment show declines in thinking and memory over time. This means that crossword puzzles can improve thinking and memory almost as much as an FDA-approved memory-enhancing medication. In fact, 37% of those doing crossword puzzles did show at least a two-point improvement. That may not sound like much, but the FDA approval for drugs that improve thinking and memory in people with Alzheimer's disease ( cholinesterase inhibitors) was based on a two-point difference on this scale. They also engaged in several shorter booster sessions.Ĭompared to their baseline performance on a 70-point scale, crossword puzzles improved participants' cognition by about one point at the 12-week timepoint, and by about half a point at the 78-week timepoint. ![]() Each group completed 30-minute sessions four times weekly for 12 weeks. Study participants were randomly assigned to either a group that solved online crossword puzzles or a group that played online cognitive games focused on memory, processing speed, and executive function. How much did crossword puzzles benefit thinking and memory? Future studies in healthy older adults will need to be conducted with crossword puzzles as the intervention to gather more evidence. The authors of the study point out that crossword puzzles are typically used as a control condition against which other interventions are measured. Will doing crossword puzzles regularly be helpful for you if your thinking and memory are normal? My best guess is that it will, but we don't know for sure. Those who took part in the study were highly educated, with most participants having a college education. Twenty-five percent identified as Black or Latino, and thus - at least regarding race and ethnicity - the results are likely generalizable to the population of the US. All had mild cognitive impairment, which means that their thinking and memory were impaired compared to healthy older adults. The participants in this 18-month study were between 62 and 80 years of age. Will doing crossword puzzles help everyone? ![]() Is this result for real? Can doing crossword puzzles really make you sharper and keep your brain from shrinking? Let's dive into this study to understand the results and see how you can apply them to your life. A study published in NEJM Evidence found that people with mild memory problems who did web-based crossword puzzles showed improvement in cognition and experienced less brain shrinkage, compared to those who played web-based cognitive games. ![]()
